Oil painting by H.W. Garratt showing a view through the front of a Garratt locomotive cab. The locomotive is entering York railway station. The painting was possibly made for publicity purposes. Garratt designed and patented his articulated steam locomotive in 1907. From 1909, they were manufactured under an exclusive UK licence by Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd. of Gorton, Manchester. over the lifetime of Garratt's design , a total of 1,636 Garratt's ran on 86 railways in 48 countries. Of these, Beyer, Peacock built 1,116.
