Description
Oil painting by H.W. Garratt showing a 0-6-0 + 0-6-0 Garratt locomotive. The image was used in early Garratt publicity brochures and as the letterhead of H.W. Garratt's stationery and was probably painted for that purpose. Garratt designed and patented his articulated steam locomotive in 1907. From 1909, they were manufactured under an exclusive UK licence by Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd. of Gorton, Manchester. over the lifetime of Garratt's design , a total of 1,636 Garratt's ran on 86 railways in 48 countries. Of these, Beyer, Peacock built 1,116.
