Description

Oil painting by H. W. Garratt showing a view through the front window of a Garratt locomotive cab.  The shape of the window suggests that this is probably the K1 Tasmanian Government Railways Garratt.  The K1 Garratt was the first Beyer-Garratt locomotive to go into production.  It was built at Gorton, Manchester between March 1909 and October 1910.  Garratt designed and patented his articulated steam locomotive in 1907.  From 1909, they were manufactured under an exclusive UK licence by Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd. of Gorton, Manchester.  over the lifetime of Garratt's design , a total of 1,636 Garratt's ran on 86 railways in 48 countries.  Of these, Beyer, Peacock built 1,116.
